The Boy Who Built a Robot

When his school announced its annual Science Fair, Ray knew exactly what he wanted to create.
"I'm going to build a robot that helps people," he said with a big smile.
For several weeks, Ray worked after school in his family's garage. He carefully connected wires, programmed a tiny computer, and attached wheels, sensors, and a pair of mechanical arms. At last, his invention was complete.
He named the little robot Sweep.
Sweep wasn't very tall, but it was smart and hardworking. Ray had programmed it to recognize paper, plastic bottles, and other litter, then pick them up and place them in a recycling bin. He hoped his invention would help keep parks and neighborhoods clean.
On the day before the Science Fair, Ray decided to test Sweep one last time.
He pressed the power button.
"System activated," Sweep said in a cheerful electronic voice.
Everything seemed perfect at first. Sweep picked up a piece of paper, collected an empty bottle, and swept the garage floor until it sparkled.
Then something unexpected happened.
Because of one tiny mistake in Ray's computer code, Sweep believed that its cleaning job never ended.
The little robot rolled straight out of the garage and onto the neighborhood street.
"Oh no!" Ray shouted as he ran after it.
But Sweep was already busy.
It collected plastic bottles from the sidewalk, swept away fallen leaves, organized recycling bins, and even watered flowers that looked dry. When it noticed an old wooden fence with peeling paint, it politely asked the owner for permission before carefully painting it to look fresh and new.
Soon, neighbors began stepping outside to see what all the excitement was about.
Children laughed as Sweep waved its little metal hand. Adults smiled as they watched the tiny robot happily cleaning every corner of the street.
"What an amazing invention!" one neighbor said.
"Our neighborhood has never looked so clean," another added.
Ray finally caught up with Sweep and quickly fixed the programming mistake using his tablet.
This time, Sweep stopped when its cleaning work was finished and happily returned to Ray's side.
At the Science Fair the next day, Sweep amazed the judges by carefully sorting recyclable materials and cleaning up without making a mess.
Ray won first prize for his invention, but the greatest reward came afterward.
The neighbors asked if Sweep could continue helping keep their streets clean every weekend.
Ray happily agreed.
From then on, Sweep became the neighborhood's favorite helper robot, and every Saturday morning, children joined Ray and Sweep to clean parks, recycle litter, and plant flowers together.
Ray learned that even a small invention can make a big difference when it is used to help others.
