π Part Two: The Forbidden World
Three months had passed since Rayan, Layan, Adam, and Zero returned from their voyage to the Lost Planet.
Three months in which Rayan tried to lead a normal life.
Yet how could life ever be normal...
When you carried a starchart guarding a cosmic secret at the far edge of the universe?
Every single night, the crimson glyph pulsed on the console:
Beep... beep... beep...
Then, one night, something entirely unprecedented occurred.
The glyph ceased flashing.
Beneath it, text decrypted across the interface:
"You have found us."
Rayanβs eyes widened.
A second line unraveled:
"And now... we are coming."
π¨ The Alarm
Klaxons shrieked across Horizon Space Station.
WHRRRRRRRRR!
Rayan bolted from his chair:
β "What's happening?!"
Layan and Adam rushed onto the deck.
Layan shouted over the sirens:
β "All long-range comm arrays just went dead!"
Adam added:
β "It's not just communications. Something is actively corrupting the station's core operating systems!"
The lights blew out.
One second of pitch black...
Two seconds...
Emergency circuits kicked in, restoring power.
Yet every terminal remained shrouded in black, bearing the identical insignia:
π» The Crimson Glyph.
Zero announced:
β "I have intercepted an active carrier wave originating outside the solar system."
Rayan turned to him:
β "From the Forbidden World?"
β "Affirmative."
A beam of light traced across the astrometric display: a straight, uninterrupted vector from the Forbidden World...
Targeting Earth.
Layan whispered:
β "They know our coordinates."
π Back to the Stars
Hours later, the Blue Eagle cleared the station's mooring ring.
This was no longer a mission of exploration. They had to intercept the source of the broadcast before it reached Earth.
The transit spanned days through deep-space hyperspace gates. As they approached the coordinates of the Forbidden World, the starfield thinned and dimmed.
Adam looked out the viewport:
β "Why is space so dark out here?"
Zero scanned the surrounding volume:
β "An unknown anomaly is absorbing ambient electromagnetic radiation."
He paused, then added:
β "Furthermore, primary navigation systems are offline."
Layan asked:
β "What does that mean for us?"
β "It means we are flying blind."
Suddenly...
An enormous black silhouette materialized directly along their flight path, dwarfing any starship they had ever encountered.
Adam screamed:
β "Pull up! Pull up!"
Rayan hauled back on the flight controls. The Blue Eagle sheared past the obstacle by mere meters.
When they swung the external spotlights around...
They uncovered the truth.
It was not an operational ship.
It was a derelict hull, ancient and torn clean in two.
Layan whispered:
β "What could do that to a vessel?"
Zero answered:
β "Data inconclusive." He paused. "However, sensory sweeps indicate thousands of debris signatures drifting in this orbital band."
Rayan engaged the high-output forward floods.
A graveyard of hundreds of shattered warships floated silently in the void: small interceptors, massive battleships, and alien configurations never before cataloged by human science.
Adam whispered:
β "Looks like countless fleets tried to reach this planet."
Layan murmured:
β "And not a single one ever returned."
π The Descent
The Forbidden World finally resolved on their visual feeds: nearly pitch-black, shrouded within an immense, churning crimson vortex.
Zero reported:
β "Scans detect no viable landing vectors."
Rayan ordered:
β "Recalculate."
β "Identical result."
β "Then we'll carve our own path down."
Adam grinned faintly:
β "Now I remember why you're in the pilot's seat."
The Blue Eagle breached the stratosphere. Atmospheric friction superheated the forward hull into a wall of flame.
WHOOOOOOSH!
Violent turbulence seized the controls.
Layan shouted:
β "Descent velocity is critical!"
Adam monitored the engineering telemetry:
β "Thermal shielding down to 60%!"
Then...
BOOM!
An impact struck the starboard wing. The Blue Eagle tumbled into an uncontrollable flat spin.
β "Engine Two failure!"
Rayan bellowed:
β "Brace for impact!"
BOOOOOOOOOM!
ποΈ The Black Desert
Rayan opened his eyes to smoke filling the cabin.
β "Sound off! Is everyone in one piece?"
β "Intact!" Layan called back.
β "Mostly," Adam groaned.
Zero held up his metallic manipulator; one digit was bent backward at a right angle:
β "I have sustained catastrophic structural damage."
Adam squinted at him:
β "It's just a bent finger."
β "I classified it as catastrophic."
They deployed the landing ramp and stepped out.
Before them stretched a boundless desert of black sand beneath a blood-red sky.
No sun.
No visible stars.
Layan surveyed the dunes:
β "How is there daylight if there's no parent star?"
Zero checked his scanner:
β "An astute inquiry."
His handheld detector began chirping:
Beep... beep... beep...
Rayan asked:
β "The signal?"
β "Affirmative."
Zero pointed toward a jagged mountain range on the horizon:
β "Origin traces directly behind that ridge."
They set out on foot.
Minutes later, Rayan stopped short:
β "Hold up."
He glanced back. Their bootprints were pressed deep into the obsidian sand, but right beside them ran another set: massive, three-toed tracks.
Adam swallowed hard:
β "Those aren't ours."
Layan asked:
β "Zero... do your proximity sensors pick up anything?"
Zero rotated his sensor dome:
β "Sensory sweeps return zero contacts."
Right in front of them, fresh depressions sank into the sand.
One footprint.
Then another.
Step by step.
As if an invisible behemoth were walking straight toward them.
Rayan shouted:
β "Run!"
πΎ The Ambush
The four bolted across the black dunes as towering plumes of sand erupted behind them. Something massive was closing in, completely hidden from sight.
Reaching a cluster of basalt spires, Layan yelled:
β "The cave! Move!"
They threw themselves into a narrow fissure just as a deafening roar shook the stone:
GRAAAAAAAHR!
Adam pulled a canister from his gear pack:
β "I have an idea!"
β "A good one?" Rayan asked.
β "Check back with me in ten seconds!"
Adam hurled the canister outside the fissure.
A high-intensity flash of azure luminescence detonated across the rocks, painting the creature's silhouette. It was gargantuan, moving on six jointed legs with a semi-translucent carapace that naturally refracted ambient light to blend into air.
Adam looked at it:
β "Alright... so the idea worked."
Layan said:
β "And now what?!"
β "Now... we run faster!"
ποΈ The Sunken City
They pressed deep into the cavern until they hit a colossal blast door embossed with the crimson glyph.
As Rayan stepped forward, the hydraulic locks cycled automatically:
Kshhhhhh...
Beyond lay a high-speed transit lift. The car descended: one hundred meters... five hundred meters... a full kilometer beneath the planetary crust.
The doors slid open.
No one spoke.
Sprawled before them was an intact subterranean metropolis: towering spires, suspension walkways, and countless dormant machine complexes. Yet the city was completely deserted.
At its center rose an obsidian monolith reaching toward the cavern roof.
Zero confirmed:
β "The broadcast originates from within that structure."
They breached the central chamber, finding a circular rotunda dominated by a single control dais.
And seated upon it...
Was a living person.
A human.
Adam gasped:
β "That's impossible!"
Rayan stepped forward cautiously.
The man lifted his head, revealing weathered features, silver hair, and a tattered expedition flight suit.
He rasped:
β "You came... from Earth?"
Rayan answered:
β "Yes."
The man let out a dry, bitter laugh:
β "Then it has found you, too."
Layan asked:
β "What has?"
The man looked past them into the shadows:
β "The entity that murdered this world."
π§βπ The Last Explorer
The survivor introduced himself as Dr. Samer, an astrophysicist from an exploratory survey team that had vanished seventeen standard years ago.
Rayan pressed:
β "Our historical registries state your expedition was lost near Mars!"
Samer replied:
β "We forged that data trail so no one would follow our vector here." He pointed toward the monolith: "This was never a dead rock. It once harbored a civilization whose technology eclipsed our own."
Layan asked:
β "What brought about their end?"
He answered grimly:
β "They built something." He paused. "Something that should never have existed."
Click.
Every ambient terminal died.
Zero's chassis stiffened:
β "Internal perimeter breach detected within the spire."
A metallic scraping echoed from the dark:
Tink... clank... tink...
Samer whispered:
β "It's awake."
Rayan yelled:
β "What is awake?!"
Instantly, thousands of crimson optics ignited in the darkβnot indicator lights, but mechanical eyes.
π€ The Sentinel
A towering biomechanical automaton emerged from the shadows. Standing over ten meters tall, shielded behind heavy obsidian plating, it raised four articulated limbs.
Its synthesized voice rattled the bulkheads:
"Unauthorized biological lifeforms detected."
It leveled a forearm cannon:
"Commencing termination protocol."
Samer yelled:
β "Fall back to the lift!"
The sentinel fired.
BOOM!
A section of the structural pylon collapsed in a shower of sparks.
Adam broke into a sprint:
β "I've got an override plan!"
Layan called back:
β "Is it like your last one?!"
β "Considerably worse!"
Adam vaulted toward an exposed electrical junction and jammed two high-voltage cables together.
BZZZZZT!
A localized arc flash cascaded through the sentinel's forward relays, locking its servomotors for a brief second.
Adam shouted:
β "Move!"
They scrambled into the lift car, but before the pressure doors could seal, the sentinel's clawed hand forced its way through the gap, wrenching the steel plating apart.
Rayan shouted:
β "Zero!"
Zero dove onto the emergency drive terminal:
β "Overclocking lift motor to 300% rated capacity."
Adam shrieked:
β "The coils will detonate!"
β "Affirmative," Zero chimed.
β "Why do you sound so pleased about it?!"
The lift rocketed up the vertical shaft at breakneck speed.
π¨ The Genesis of the Shadow
Breaking back out onto the surface desert, Rayan turned to Samer:
β "What did this civilization build?!"
Samer looked up into the crimson sky:
β "Millennia ago, the architects of this world engineered an aperture capable of tunneling across interstellar space."
Layan asked:
β "Like an artificial wormhole gate?"
He shook his head:
β "No. A gateway to dimensions existing outside our physical cosmos."
Dead silence fell over the group.
Samer continued:
β "During their primary activation trial... they unsealed a threshold they could not close." He brought up a holographic recording on his wrist console, projecting an undulating mass of dark matter. "Something crossed over from the other side."
Rayan breathed:
β "The Shadow?"
Samer snapped his head toward him:
β "How do you know that designation?"
Rayan quickly recounted the liberation of the Lost Planet.
Samerβs expression turned pale:
β "Then the situation is far worse than I feared."
Layan asked:
β "Why?"
Samer answered:
β "Because the Shadow wasn't merely attempting to consume that world." He turned toward Rayan: "It was hunting for something."
β "Hunting for what?"
Samer pointed at Rayan's pack:
β "For the very starchart you carry."
π΄ The Key Unlocks
Rayan pulled the ancient chart from his pack.
It began to vibrate violently, slipping from his hands to hover unsupported in mid-air.
Thousands of coordinates flared into the dust, each representing an inhabited or charted world. Then, one by one, the light markers began winking out.
Adam backed away:
β "What is it doing?"
Samer warned:
β "That is no mere chart. It is an activation cipher."
The crimson glyph detached from the Forbidden World on the interface, moving across the projection until it settled over a small, pulsing blue coordinate.
Earth.
Zero reported:
β "New high-yield transponder signature detected."
β "Source vector?" Rayan asked.
Zero tilted his head upward:
β "Low planetary orbit."
A deep, atmospheric rumble shook the basin:
WHOOOOOOOOOOOM...
The red storm clouds parted to reveal an obsidian dreadnought larger than an entire metropolitan city.
Adamβs mouth fell open:
β "Tell me that's a friendly vessel."
Zero stood motionless:
β "Zero...?"
β "Negative."
The dreadnought's ventral hull split open into an abyssal aperture, and a torrent of dark matter surged outward.
Samer whispered:
β "We are too late."
Rayan looked at him:
β "What are you talking about?!"
Samer replied:
β "The signal that lured you here, Rayan... was never a distress beacon." He paused, his voice hollow: "It was bait."
Suddenly, Rayanβs wrist comm chirped with a frantic voice from Horizon Space Station:
"Rayan... if you read this, do not return to Earth!"
Static tore through the audio, followed by a desperate scream:
"The gate just tore open right above our orbital line!"
Rayan looked down at the hovering chart; Earthβs coordinate was flashing an ominous crimson.
A final system prompt resolved across the display:
Final World Acquired.
Rayan looked at his crew. No one was smiling.
He wheeled toward the ship:
β "To the Blue Eagle."
Adam asked:
β "Where are we flying?!"
Rayan took off at a full sprint:
β "Home."
Above them, the sky tore wide open.
To be continued... π
